Hi Kailun,

I received a degree for Psychology several years ago and some of my favorite classes involved data and research which led me into the technology industry for my career. Something else very important in any field is learning about the past - there have been a lot of experiments done on human subjects, both ethically and unethically. If you are interested in getting into human research experiments, you can often sign up to work at labs which may give you college credit and more real world experience. At my college, they offered extra credit for psychology classes if you participated in many college research efforts around human interaction and problem solving exercises.

A final note on Psychology is that a lot of people think it is a waste of a degree. It's actually a very useful degree if you go into HR, Data and Research, Clinical Studies, Social Work, and even Management. But it will be necessary for you to find a specialization that you prefer working in, in order to really get the time you put into it out when you are looking for a career.

Hi Kailun,
I loved the upper level classes at my university like Abnormal Psychology, Memory, and Perception. They were by far my favorites! There are so many options based on your interests and the school, so definitely check out what your college/university has to offer! Typically, I think all psych majors have to take some form of Abnormal Psychology (it may be called something else by school, but typically its a class with more information regarding diagnosing and disorders.) Make sure to check on Rate My Professor, or ask around to make sure you get a great teacher =)! It makes a difference =).

Hi Kailun! I agree with the previous answers, Psychology is a very fun major. I think there are a lot of different classes to take; after your core classes like Intro to Psych, Psych stats, Experimental, etc. you can take electives that you like. I liked Abnormal Psychology and Forensic, there are so many different topics. As a premed student in undergrad I enjoyed connecting the psychology I was learning to my premed courses too. My psych professors were very fun especially my professor that I had for both Psych Stats and Experimental, it was interesting to see different studies and learn more about who we are. There are also really interesting studies to take part in, so definitely check that out, especially since as a freshmen/sophomore, students may be required to complete different studies for credits in their respective Psych courses! Overall Psychology is a cool major and one you will enjoy!

I hope this helps, best of luck!

Tahani’s Answer

Hello Kailun!
I am a Psychology major and my favorite classes so far have been Abnormal psych, Social psych, Marriage/Family and Intimate Relationships, and Physiological psych.
There is so much to learn in psychology, and everything you learn will help you understand people a little more and improve the way you communicate within relationships. For example, I'm a parent and I have really been able to utilize the information I've learned in my Developmental psych classes and Child psychology classes as well. My Marriage and Family psych class inspired me to focus my studies on marriage and family so when I finish school I would love to become an MFT!
Industrial-Organizational psych is really good if you are business-focused and interested in jobs in HR. There are so many different branches of psychology, different perspectives, and areas of study that would surprise you! This will be an interesting journey for you, I hope you enjoy all of the classes you take!

I learned a lot about myself during my major in psychology. Through classes, I was able to learn "why" are we who we are and "how" are we like this. A few of my favorite classes were human development, human sexuality, visual perception, and industrial-organizational psychology. I had so much fun in all of my experimental lab classes.
