Cameron,

I have worked a lot with game designers (both developers, designers and 3D modelers). There are a lot of different positions and skill sets within the game design industry. I have noticed that game designers have varied backgrounds and there is no one path to the gaming industry. My best advice would be to reach out to game developers and ask them directly about the journey to their current role. I would also recommend trying to build your own video game. Even if it is a small simple game, you will still get to see what goes into games, and start to figure out which skills you want to focus on.

There are colleges and schools with programs specifically for technology, visual effects, and gaming. My suggestion is to enter one of these programs.

You can start designing mobile games if you want to but if you have not started writing design docs that is probably the best place to start. This will allow you to flesh out your ideas and actually know what it is you want to make. It will allow you to properly plan out a game, from making sure your core game loop is strong and that you have enough resources or currency being given to the player and enough going back into the game systems (sinks and faucets or inflows and outflows).

Depending on the type of game you can also start by making a table-top prototype, there are game pieces on Amazon that you can purchase like little characters, dice, spinners, chips, etc...

If you have not started making MODS then I would look into starting that I know there are different MOD communities that you can join and even get on a team. You can also start working in Unity3d or Unreal, there are a ton of tutorial videos on YouTube.

Generally, you'll want a degree in game design, but you could try your hand at video game development. As a video game developer, it will help to develop your own portfolio of games you've made. I'd recommend checking out game jams like the one hosted by Game Maker's Toolkit on itch.io. He has a very successful Youtube channel and has had record-breaking numbers of participants in his game jams these past years. Game jams are multi-day events where entrants compete to make games that match the theme of the jam. You don't need any prior experience to participate and you'll find people, especially on Discord, who would be excited to point you in the direction of free resources. It helps to have a focused event like this to practice using a skill. It makes it easier to practice the skill and wrap your head around which parts of the coding process are giving you issues.
