I'm not a marine engineer but in general for students who want to learn and explore all kinds of career is to conduct information interview.
(1) Start a LinkedIn Profile, search Marine Engineer, you can find engineers anywhere you want, or even narrow your search to your geographic area.
(2) Add friends/connection to those you Send a nice and humble message to introduce yourself and mention you are curious about the career in marine engineer, and ask for a phone call for information interview for 10 mins.
(3) They would response to you, if not, just keep trying other people.
-The trick of 10 mins is it's short and people should have 10 mins to spare in the busy schedule.
-Don't forget to ask career consoler in your school for resources, and reach out to your alumni network as well.
-If you are able to find people locally, you can even ask for a "coffee chat" for a in person meet up.

Hi Sian,
It's great that you already decided on your dream job. For your question, I would suggest you:
1. Make connections with other marine engineer on LinkedIn, and send messages for their advice.
2. Talk to your family member, who is the most important to you. Share with them about the marine engineer job and ask for their advice, so that you can have a sense of the suitability of the job with your family.
