Learn everything you can!
That includes maintenance and repairs, because, if you are broken down on the side of the road, it isn't getting your product where it needs to go.
Understand that you are driving a vehicle that takes a while to stop, and, understand that other drivers either don't "get it" or don't care. Learn secrets for staying awake on long stretches, such as ice water applied to the back of the neck, use of eye drops, etc. Learn about hazardous driving conditions, be it ice or city traffic. When you are driving, you will be making split -second decisions. Like the military or law enforcement, you will have to rely on your training to guide you in those moments, because, quite honestly, there's no time for thinking it through! Also learn about regulatory compliance. There are a lot of regulations to learn and follow, and, lots of record-keeping. That will keep you out of trouble.
Thank you for wanting to get your CDL. Stay safe out there!

Practice your skills - backing with a trailer, taking wide turns, using 6 second rule for flowing other vehicles. Take a basic diesel class so you troubleshoot issues so you can be safe. Remember your walk around and do it all the time. It important and will help you find any defects on the vehicle you are driving.
