What is the best part about becoming a nurse?
I have heard really great things about becoming a nurse, but to the nurses out there, why do you stay in it?

Hello again Ms Fiona!
For me the reason I stay in healthcare, as a registered nurse is because of the following:
1.) Patient Care
2.) Lack of Nurses
3.) Team Player
There are many times when healthcare facilities do not have enough staff to run operations effectively due to the nurses whom have chosen to move on into other career paths.
It definitely isn’t an easy time to be a nurse, but when you see your fellow co workers ‘grinding’ day in and day out, it makes you want to help out as much as possible.
:). Have a good rest of your weekend.

I have been a nurse for 39 years and still love my job, I would not want to do anything else. I love helping patients and families, the rewards of helping another person in some small way gives me more job satisfaction than a paycheck ever could. I love the diversity in roles, the opportunities for nurses to grow and expand in many directions is one the main reasons I love my job so much. I have held my different types of roles including bedside, nurse educator, manager, Nurse Midwife, faculty and my current role as a Director of Clinical Education. Nursing is not an easy career but for me, the importance of being happy in my job is paramount. You spend so many hours of your life at work so it is important to be happy in your career. This is a career for life, you will never be bored.

I have been in the world of nursing for over 25 years and overall I would say it is pretty darn great! I was a nursing assistant while I was in nursing school and then became a registered nurse with my BSN and did floor nursing for 10 years and then during that time went back to school to become a nurse practitioner with my MSN and have been a nurse practitioner now for 13 years. For me personally, I absolutely love being a nurse practitioner and am so glad that I continued with my education; this has allowed me to work with patients in a much broader role which I greatly appreciate. I am currently in school to get my DNP which is a doctorate degree in nursing. There are so many diverse areas where you can practice in nursing, such as pediatrics, cardiology, hospital nursing, clinic nursing… You get the point. I think nursing is a field that will always have a job opportunities in many fields and wherever you live. The pay is certainly decent and the amount of opportunities is wonderful. Outside of clinical practice, some people choose to go into teaching or administration/management and those can be a great roles as well.
