Kristopher, great question thanks. First, expect to be a gopher starting out. Everybody has to pay their dues learning the ropes, so listen fasten, speak less, pay attention and remember what your told. Secondly, and depending on what union is there in Chicago I would join it....good training. Thirdly, the challenges is truly finding your own niche (what your good at) and once you do that master it.

Hi Kristopher! Great question because the construction industry needs more of you! I mimic a bit of Eric's answer as far as starting out. Need to learn the process of how your potential new Construction Company works on a day to day basis. I strongly suggest finding a large construction company as there are more opportunities to learn and grow.
Come to work prepared and a great attitude. Be properly geared up from steel toed boots to sunscreen and a lunch. I used to bring a small chest pocket notepad and take notes when orders or "how to's" were given.
You're persistence and self discipline in your personal life and work life will absolutely reap rewards.
Underground & Aerial (on telephone and electric poles) Construction is a trade that will be busy for the rest of your life and can pay amazingly well!
