Can you take prerequisite courses at a community college whilst in high school?

Just wondering if this would be possible- I understand it might vary on the school.

I don't think there are anything that prevents you from taking community courses while being in high school, as long as the community college allows high school students!

Yes you can take pre-recs while you are in high school. BUT you will want to consider if you are going into a 4 year straight out of high school ensure the school you want to go to accept the transferable class you are taking at a community. You wouldnt want to waist money on a class that may no be accepted at your future 4 year.

In some cases the answer is yes. It just depends on your location and surrounding colleges. Some high schools also offer some courses for college credits. For example, when I was in high school there was a course offered in Statistics that I was able to take and earn a college credit. These programs/courses are very helpful. I suggest prerequisite/ liberal studies at a community college as it tends to be more affordable.

Hi Anita, you are right in the sense of it may be best to ask your school guidance counselor. That being said, in the school I have gone to, I could take community college classes via a dual credit program by junior year of high school. Our school also began a collegiate academy during my senior year that opened dual classes to freshmen and sophomores as well. I would personally say wait until junior year to do dual classes or community college courses, to ensure you are in the best place academically to attend these courses (though this varies for everyone.)

Hey Anita,

I would schedule a meeting with your counselor by either asking them in person or setting up a meeting if they have a website or other means of contact. Usually, you would take this class during the summer and skip to the next level or whichever subject you want to advance in. Hope this was helpful.

Of course! It’s a great way to get a jump on college credits. Some of the courses are called advance placement or college preparatory. I know when some high schools honors classes may have an extra credit that can go towards a college degree at a local university or college. I would talk to your school guidance counselor about those particular courses and any programs that the school may have with Local community colleges that offer those sort of programs.
