Hello! I am so glad that you are interested in an art career! It can be fun and challenging but there are opportunities to take this in so many directions. The best place to start is to draw every day. Drawing from cartoons is a good but also try to draw things in real life by looking at people and things around you. Watch youtube and tiktok tutorials. Try lots of mediums from paint to colored pencils to markers. In art, you learn by doing. Discover what you like to do and even those things you don’t enjoy as much. As you develop, you could try the drawing app Procreate or software like Adobe illustrator and photoshop. Learning both hand drawing and digital art will help you get the skills needed. First step is to draw every day.

Rebecca recommends the following next steps:

draw every day. keep a sketchbook
try different mediums paint, markers etc.
draw from real life people animals and objects in front of you
watch online tutorials
learn what you love to create most

I think social media would be your best friend. I know there are countless artists who post their work on Twitter and they even do commissions, so you can maybe look up some of those to get inspiration. I also think it would be good to be more consistent and start developing your own style. Hope this helps!

Hi Richard, there are many ways you can grow your knowledge and skills in art! From free resources: drawing from things around you as often as you can, looking up YouTube videos about beginner drawing skills, using the internet or library for more information, watching documentaries about artists that interest you, following artists you like on social media, and maybe even joining artistic meet ups if appropriate :). Some non-free, but great ways to learn are going to college (or taking classes at community college), purchasing online classes from places like Udemy or Domestika to learn specific skills, or purchasing some books. Nothing beats practice, but for me joining a class helps me grow much faster than on my own! I started with cartoons as well, and am currently taking classes at community college.

Hi Richard! Firstly, I would check your local library to see if they have any books about drawing (or even about cartooning) that you could check out. I personally love Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and Making Comics, which offer a deep dive into the art form.
Also, I would start studying artists that you like, and see what makes them so good. Study the way that different artists use form and line to make their characters pop from the page. Sometimes, even just making an artist's study (trying to make it as close to the original as possible without tracing) of a character or page can offer new insights into how that particular artist made their work.
And honestly? Make fan art. Draw what you like over and over again, especially if it's a character you like or admire. Try new styles, new poses for that character. Not only will you start to get better and better at drawing, but you'll enjoy it so much more.
