Jack’s Answer

Hi Will!

If you're wanting to get a jump-start on prepping for a Business Intelligence Analyst degree and eventual position I would really recommend taking some online courses to introduce yourself to both SQL and Excel. There are many different free video series on YouTube and LinkedIn that you can take at your own pace to introduce you to both topics.

This will help you in a couple of ways. First, its extremely likely you will take courses in college that use either SQL, Excel, or (like me) both. If you take courses now and start to become familiar, you'll not only have an easier time in those classes but will likely learn more from them. Second, both skills are used in jobs across the business field outside of just Business Intelligence Analysis. If you start college and find that you want to choose a different career path in the business field, these skills would still be extremely helpful to have and would set you apart from your peers who might not have started learning earlier.

Hope this helps and provides some direction!

Sincerely,
Jack

Hi Will,

I would recommend to focus SQL and data visualisation tools such as Tableau. These would be critical skills to have in this kind of role.

Thanks!

Howard’s Answer

Hello Will,

To become a business intelligence analyst, I believe you should first attend college and major in business. Once you attain your bachelor's degree, you should try to find an internship that involves business intelligence procedures. I am sure that once you are completing your senior year in college, the institution's career counselor can assist you in finding an internship. You might also want to volunteer to accomplish some work in a company that has your major. Then I would suggest you get a certification in business intelligence to better prepare you for the working world. You can start this process in coordination with your 3 or 6 month internship. After this process, you can then update your resume and apply to trainee positions in business intelligence. Hope this helps you with some direction and I wish you the best in all future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Professor C
