Also note there is no one career that is a guarantee to be a long term success, no matter what you choose you still have to put the effort and be flexible and open to learn new things. Today there are many adults in careers that are unrelated to their training and education, and yet are quite happy in their careers. So leave room to explore any new areas that capture your interest. In all things you have to allow yourself to learn new things and skills because even technology is changing at a rapid pace and some professions are changing as a result. So be open to new things and experiences.

Hi:

Accounting and finance are very good fields to get into. I would try to narrow it down to what your preference is whether accounting or finance and maybe major in that one and minor in the other if possible. Try to do an internship in both an accounting type job and finance type job you like to get feel for both areas.

Some jobs in finance can be more commission like stockbroker or you have salaried jobs like credit analyst or underwriter or financial planner. If you go into something like stockbroker you are helping someone plan for their retirement. It is a little higher pressure in that you are most likely either going to be on full commission structure or low base salary with mostly commissions. It will depend on whether that is too pressure filled knowing you have to get clients signed up to make money or if that type of environment you thrive in as your income potential is unlimited and can be very high. Credit Analyst or Underwriter is what I do and can be very rewarding as you are analyzing a persons credit profile, bank statements, tax returns, w2s, paystubs and appraisals to determine and help an individual qualify for a house.

Accounting I have only taken classes in college but seems to be a very solid career as well that would be stable. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Nothing in life is guaranteed...including career after college. After graduating and hopefully optimizing the knowledge, experience and skills you can gain in college, it will then be up to you to use and build on that base in your work career.

The good news is that Business Admin and Finance/Accounting is a very practical degree and can be used in several careers - CPA firms, industry, entrepreneur.

Like a carpenter, once you know how to use the tools of the trade, it will be up to you to build the best things. If you can build the best things, then you will be rewarded in job satisfaction, personal relationships and financially.

Good luck and well wishes

Rose’s Answer

There are thousands of different career paths available. If you are set on accounting and finance, the next step is to figure out which industries and functions you would like to pursue.

Financial compensation will not be the only consideration when you get into a career. There is a wide range of lifestyle choices available for Finance/Accounting professionals. You may be an employee, a consultant, a manager, an individual contributor, an entrepreneur, or a contractor, among other options.

Your career is a journey. The decisions you make now are not the end of the process of figuring out what you want to do "when you grow up."

George’s Answer

that would be a great combo degree(s) and should work well for you.
there are a lot of people want financial advise. I would say the combo would give you more options for employment as well. When applying you may focus on one more than the other but mention how the other complements you and you would be a good candidate.
These are both broad fields actually but I still feel the combination just opens more doors for you. You can specialize within the company once your in the door as well, especially if the employer is larger.
