Sami’s Answer
As with all medical specialties, being very good at your job will get you the most patient referrals. After graduating from a good 4-year medical school, try to get into the best surgical residency program you can, and excel in the program so that you develop the necessary surgical skills.

Hi Lauren and Fellow Readers,
That is amazing that you are pursuing a career as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and what an adventure it will be. You need to think about your question a little further and more broadly vs just patients requesting you if they are in any "pain". The particular pain could be related to another region of the body completely outside of your specialty. What I would recommend you focus on is your ability to become the best Cardiothoracic Surgeon in your particular market, accredited, board certified and a student of the medical field. The stronger your knowledge base will be the stronger and more patients will automatically want to work with you as a recommendation.
I wish you nothing but the best.
