Elizabeth’s Answer

No matter what area of medicine you choose, compassion, understanding, and a desire to learn will be necessary traits. Pediatric oncology is a specialized field of medicine so you will want to do well in medical schools and the appropriate exams, but you will also want to ensure you are ready to handle the emotional toll that may come with this area of medicine. I would interview and shadow physicians and ask them about a "day in the life" in this field as well as learning about the challenges of working not only with children, but educating parents.
