There is no one answer to this question, as there are many different ways to go about running an art business. However, there are some basic steps that you will need to take in order to get your business up and running. First, you will need to develop a business plan. This will help you to determine your business goals and how you plan to achieve them. Next, you will need to obtain the necessary licenses and permits to operate your business. Once you have these in place, you can start marketing your business and selling your artwork. Finally, it is important to keep good records and track of your finances so that you can stay organized and profitable.

Hi Aiden,
There seems to be many ways to go about it--it depends on what your goal is. You can search many YouTube videos of artists who expand on how they got their business or career going. You can also join in on Illustration Isolation online on Thursdays to hear professional artists speak (sometimes about their experiences and sometimes just random, fun topics! Search it online.)

Ellen’s Answer

HI Aiden!
Art business can mean many many things. I'm not exactly sure what you mean: Selling your artwork? Creating graphic designs for companies? Screen printing T-shirts with your designs? Selling handmade cards? Other???

But yes, art can be a hobby , but it also can be a business, and with all businesses there are certain organizational tools that you will need. I started selling my prints at craft fairs, and it was an eye-opener as to what starting a business entails. Lots of things to think about, such as:

-Do you have a business plan? What do you want your business to accomplish, and how will you reach your goals?
-What will you call your business?
-What is your market, do you have an idea of who will use your business?
-Where will you conduct your business? Out of your home, at craft fairs, or will you have other places such as stores or galleries sell your work?
-What kind of funding do you have for your business to get started?have you check out any bookkeeping Apps?
-Do you need a license for your business in your area?
-What about collecting taxes, and reporting taxes to your local and state government?
-What about filing tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?

As you can see from this list, there is certainly a lot involved! It is complicated starting a business, and you probably will need help, more help than I could provide here. So, If you are in high school, I would talk to your art teachers about your art, but if your school offers any business classes, I would talk to those teachers about relevant classes to learn how to start a business. Also check with your school or local library; talk with the librarian to see what resources they have about starting a business, and of course, have a look at the internet for ideas.

Best wishes!
