How many years of college does it take to be a controller or financial manager?

What would my growth rate in salary be is I try to pursue this career. Is college necessary to be a financial manager/advisor.

Thank you comment icon In order to become a controller or financial manager, the number of years in college would not make a difference as long as you have a bachelor's degree. Some jobs may require a masters or MBA, but obtaining the appropriate certifications (CPA/CFA) after college would determine whether or not you would be able to pursue these opportunities. Also, I would think about the different jobs out of college that would allow you to get to these career paths. Emily Hageboeck

That type of position normally requires a masters degree. The pay is very well for these types of positions which is why the college education is a requirement. I am currently working on my masters so that I can become a controller.

Kendra’s Answer

Hello,

I would suggest at least getting a bachelor's degree for this type of career path and to receive a competitive salary. Depending upon the company you work for salaries can be high and you can make a great living. A master's can not hurt, but not sure if it is required. You should consider the cost benefit of the cost of tuition for the masters verse starting your career.

Hi Chelsea,

Having a college degree is definitely key to becoming a controller or financial manager, however, I would also say that the experience you obtain prior to those positions is also important, if not more important. A master's degree and/or certifications such as a CPA, CFA, etc, will also pay dividends and be beneficial to reaching this career goal. I cannot speak to salary specifics, but I am sure that the pay in these positions will be high. I hope this helps!

Rebecca’s Answer

I am glad to hear that you have already decided the career you would like to pursue and you have your own career objectives.
Firstly, to be Financial Controller, you would better to take the relevant subjects in the college, e.g. Accounting, Finance, etc. as your major.
Then, while you study in the college, you can explore any intern opportunities to work in the prestigious accounting firms. This is important and can brighten up your cv when you graduate.
After you graduate from the college, you can continue to look for the opportunities working in the prestigious accounting firms. If you has been the intern before, it increases the chances that they would give you an offer.
In addition, I suggest you could also achieve the relevant professional qualification, e.g. CPA, CFA, etc. This could help you to improve your knowledge and advance your career path.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
