Micheal’s Answer

There are many paths that you can take outside of traditional nursing. Case management, quality assurance, risk management to name a few. I work in reimbursement and quality metrics in long term care and skilled nursing. I haven't passed meds or worked "the floor" in many years. Most of these positions carry a mid to senior management level with them as well.

Alma’s Answer

I currently work as an RN Case Manager and enjoy my job very much. I get to help patients during their stay in the hospital and help them navigate the Healthcare system.
There are many opportunities as an RN but my recommendation is getting a good foundation in the nursing field. I will always be grateful for my experience in the hospital, as a district school nurse, and as a pediatric home Healthcare nurse all these jobs gave me the foundation to work in the case management field.
As long as you love the nursing profession, you will never work a day in your life regardless which route you take. Good luck!!

Kimberly’s Answer

Right now there are huge opportunities to advance into an unlimited scope of fields that could peak your interest and make you happy. Doing what you enjoy is truly the key to success. Did you start studying nursing because you are interested in medicine, science, or helping people? Never feel limited, at a young age you can study so many different things. If you dont know what you want to be, you can get a general business degree even just starting at a local junior college to get an associates degree. That will open up lots of opportunities to get you started. If you are ready to shoot higher and were interested in medical, why not a doctor vs a nurse? Nurse is a great place to start and has lots of different specialties based on your interests. See if you can contact a local hospital and ask to be mentored by a nurse who can fill you in on the day of a life they experience. If medicine is your general interest, you can spur into specialties like sports medicine, physical therapy, dentistry, elder care, or if you decide for example you are more interested in animals over people you can go the route of Vet Tech or Veterinarian. If you have decided maybe medicine isnt your passion, go on job boards to see different types of things that are available that may peak your interest and talk to local colleges or counselors to find out how to best train for that type of career. In a nutshell, a nurse is an amazing job but its all about your passion if that is what is right for you or not. Hope this helps!

Bailey’s Answer

I appreciate my job as a nurse, however, I wish someone would have told me about the other healthcare careers to research. This includes ultrasound tech, echo tech, and x-ray tech. They all have their own path and special certifications as well. They are very task oriented careers. Typically have one specific job to do and can do it very well. You can work 12 he shifts and see many different patients.
