Christine’s Answer

Most vessels have 3 departments onboard, the Deck department, the Engine department, and the Stewards department. The Deck department navigates or steers the vessel and is responsible for the cargo and safety equipment, including lifeboats, fire-fighting equipment and medical response gear. The Engine department operates, maintains, and repairs engines, boilers, generators, pumps, and other machinery. The Stewards department prepares and serves all the meals onboard, they also order the food and conduct general housekeeping. Like the military, the maritime industry has officer and unlicensed roles. Most crew members work between 10-12 hours a day, 7 days of the week for the duration of their contract/hitch. Hitches can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months.
Pay varies from company to company and is based on your rank. And promotions depend on your experience/seatime and required classes.

Put all your heart into the Career. Be self disciplined. Learn as much as you can every minute. Don't worry about salary? It varies a lot from rank and order.
