Is Graphic Design the career for me?

Next year I'm planning to get a certificate in Graphic Design. Problem is I'm not creative or artistic. I really love art. I'm thinking of teaching myself to draw ect. I struggle to think outside the box and scared I will fail next year. I wonder if studying further is necessary and should I work for myself or not.

Tyler’s Answer

Real talk -- ask yourself why you want to be a graphic designer. It seems like your only motivation is a vague interest in art.

If you think deeply about it, and you keep coming back to this love for graphic design, go for it! Take courses, see if you enjoy it, and then develop your skills.

But please reflect. Ask yourself "why" for any career you want to explore. Graphic design isn't the only "creative" career path. I encourage you to look into UX design and UX research and see if those align more with your interests and skills. If you realize something else sparks joy, explore that path. But don't settle for a job that doesn't make you 100% happy.

Nadine, as Joe mentioned above, don't be afraid to try out graphic design even if you're not feeling like art is your strong suit! You never know where your career can take you and it's always worth giving it a shot. Alternatively, have you considered a career in UX design for software, website, mobile applications, etc.? I'd highly recommend looking into it!

Hi Nadine,

Don't let fear hold you back! Give it a try if you really do enjoy it -- nobody starts off being great at something from Day 1.

Be patient with yourself and be kind to yourself! It takes time to develop skill

Rachel’s Answer

Hello Nadine,

Hope this message finds you well. I understand your concern as I have gone through the similar feeling and thoughts in my early 20's. The most important advise I would like to give you is that don't be afraid to start something because you are afraid of the results. You never know until you start but you will learn from the experience at least and I'm sure whatever it is, there will be a value added onto you in some way. You love art so much but worried that you are not that creative and artistic, that's no problem. Talent is not the only factor that makes people success, it might be easier but I believe passion is the most important factor. You might want to do some research about career path and industry news related to Graphic Design. It will help you plan your future path.

Joe’s Answer

Hello Nadine,

Good day, hope this message finds you well, let me start by saying NEVER be afraid to fail! Yes never be afraid, failure is not a negative transition in life, it only becomes that when the same mistake is repeated ;-)
Now on with positive aspect of this, as mentioned before never get discouraged when it comes to following your passion and or dreams, if you want to become a graphic designer then go for it, go get some graphic design classes you will find out that most will have a lot of geometry involved, specially if you are looking in designing blueprints, for rooms , buildings, and other architectural structures, if you are going for straight art same thing, art is always based on what the public eye considers art, look at Picasso, or Van Gogh, even Jim Lee all were criticized heavily when they started and now they are staples in art.
So bottom line if you are looking to go and initiate a graphic design career, go for it! Get some classes, get your self a sketch book and start honing your skill, do not get discourage oh yes and it definitely helps if you start working for a company and slowly build a clientele base.
try this just for kicks, get yourself a book in drafting for beginners, get a drafting book, take some measurements of the place where you live and see what kind of design you could create? Maybe redesign the kitchen, living room, your own bedroom or studio? each step taken will get you closer to the goal.
Hope this helps
Have an awesome week
All best
