Rocket - I commend you for wanting to do good for the community!

There's a great article on career trajectory for video game developers: http://blog.indeed.com/2017/01/10/video-game-labor-snapshot/

It looks like the demand for these types of jobs are increasing, but the supply is decreasing for various reasons. With that said, I encourage you to research the field, see what types of entry level roles exist, and what qualifications these employers are looking for.

Another recommendation is to start preparing for a career in software development and coding. This will give you flexibility to work not only in the video game industry, but many other industries.

Good luck!

Tanner’s Answer

To become a video game designer, you need a blend of creativity, technical prowess, and understanding of the industry. Begin by refining your abilities in art, design, narrative crafting, and understanding game mechanics. You might want to think about getting a degree in game design, computer science, or a similar field to acquire formal education and knowledge. Moreover, get to know game development tools like Unity or Unreal Engine, and master programming languages such as C# or C++. This will help you grasp the technical side of game design. Participate in game jams, develop your own game projects, and look for internships or beginner roles in the gaming industry to gain practical experience. Keep in mind that game design is a team effort, so connecting with professionals in the industry and becoming part of game development communities can offer valuable insights and opportunities. By crafting captivating and immersive games, you could potentially earn money that can be used to support charitable causes and assist those in need.

Dayton’s Answer

Video games can be a hard industry to break into, because there are a lot - a LOT - of people who want to go into that same field. The best advice I can give you is to design games for fun. When they're hiring someone with no prior work experience, companies will look for amateur experience as a kind of proxy. And in a field like video games, there will be a lot of folks that have made a video game in their spare time.

So make something in RPG Maker. Design pen-and-paper adventures. Grab Unity, or mod tools for any of the many popular games that have good mod support.
