A green screen is a cool gadget! Using a green screen allows you to show anything you'd like as the background once the picture is taken. Stand in front and smile and you could be on an island somewhere, standing at the top of Mt. Everest, or even in space! While the pictures will display the image on a computer or in a literal photo, the screen itself will look green to everyone in person, hence the name.
Be careful though. One time I was at an event in a bright green dress and the green screen background showed up where my dress should have been. When standing in front of the green screen the only parts of me that showed up were my head and arms since the colors were so close! It was hilarious.

The green screen is used to display the background of your choice without actually being in that setting. Basically, you could look like you're standing on a beach when in reality you're in a studio.
