James’s Answer

For Medical Administrative Careers here are some important values I wish I knew before I started in the industry:

1.) Never be afraid to ask questions if you're not sure of how to do a task. It's better to ask a question to go back in the future and fix what you might have done incorrectly.

2.) Communication skills are important since you will be speaking to patients and/or doctors. In the beginning it was easier for write down a script before reaching out to people for information just so I was a little more sure of myself.

3.) Make sure to have good analytical skills because you will be dealing with sensitive information. Especially when dealing with phone numbers, SSN, Billing information it's important to make sure it is correct because it will be a problem in the future if done incorrectly.

Bailey’s Answer

Here is a few things I wished I was told before starting an office job.

1.) People are going to be mean. Every day… all the time. On the phone and in person. Mastering how to stay calm and professional can be very challenging but necessary.

2.) The walls have ears…. Be careful what you say and who you say it to. Every office will have work place gossip. Try your best to stay out of it and not to spread it.

3.) Food makes people happy. You don’t have to do this, but sometimes it is helpful if you want to network. Keeping a jar of candy at your desk is a great way to have people stop by and say hello.

4.) When you make a mistake, own it and learn from it. Offer to fix the mistake, even if it means calling the patient back and explaining the situation.

5.) Keep a pocket notebook handy so you can write down how to do things. Take good notes during your training and show you are willing to learn.
