Thank you for the question!

I think one of the first things to think about when discussing the medical field is knowing you have the personality and temperament to enjoy that career. It can be very rewarding, but also there can be challenges when it comes to delivering difficult news or working with sick patients. If that is ok with you - this is an incredibly rewarding and lucrative field to work in. Another thought, what area in the Medical Field? A Doctor? A nurse? Chiropractor? - There are so many roles and jobs available in that field, it would be to figure out your passion regarding what area in the medical field, and follow your passion !!

I would add to try and volunteer or shadow at your local hospital. Remember , the medical field is more then Just nursing and doctors so explore your opportunities. There are many different fields and industries that crossover with healthcare from photography, digital arts, traditional medicinal practice , laboratory, IT, accounting, philanthropy, ethics, rehabilitation, therapy etc. Don’t feel limited in options there’s are many ways to impact the health of a patient both bedside and behind the scenes.

When I first read this question, I wondered exactly what portion of the medical field so I will try to answer this for what the question is. Follow job paths and education paths that match what you want to do. Science is going to be a must so take chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology to get a taste of what's to come that way it doesn't seem as unfamiliar when you have to take it at the college level.
Next, as far as jobs go when you're younger, look at lifeguards, customer service or jobs that teach you how to care for others. All medical jobs are customer service based and the earlier you learn waiting on people the easier it will be as an adult.
Lastly, build a support system, have family and friends that you can really talk to because when you have a bad day you're just gonna want someone to listen even if they don't "get it."
Good Luck and I hope this helped.

Great question! It really depends on which aspect of the medical field you are interested in. If you’re interested in nursing or even becoming a doctor, getting your feet wet by getting a job in a hospital would be a great start! For myself, I got a job as a nurse aide in a hospital because I had an interest in nursing. I worked different units in the hospital to see which area I liked the best. Then I took my pre-requisite courses for nursing and eventually was accepted into the nursing program. They also have volunteer services in hospitals if you are interested in taking a less permanent jump. You won’t get the best understanding of the medical field doing this but you’ll see some basic operations.
Good luck!

Pamela’s Answer

The question is very broad, and exactly what you do will vary on what part of the medical you want to work in, but being good at science and math is important for the classes you need to take. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, English. Although the science is important you do need to be able to math and write well. I would suggest if possible spend some time with someone who does the job you are interested in doing, so you can see the day to day, and also can ask questions about job duties, pay, how much time it takes, the joys and the difficulties.
