Hello Markell, thank you for your question. I would assume that food truck works would probably make no more than minimum wage. If you are thinking of going into this field, might I suggest that you look into buying your own truck food truck. If you don't have the capital for the truck, you may want to whit out a business plan and present it to a family member or a family friend. Best of luck

https://www.salary.com/research/salary/hiring/food-truck-worker-salary/chicago-il says in Chicago the avg. is $29k.

However, I would imagine that many food trucks are owned by small business and won't offer insurance nor other benefits. So you'll want to compare total benefits and not just pay. I'm sure there are many jobs that pay more and provide benefits.

Marcos’s Answer

Hello Markell, Hope all is well!

I did a project in high school/college on food trucks and can provide some insight to better assist you with your question. First, I am not an owner of a food truck, I am a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). To answer your question you must consider the following items.

-Location
-Owner or Employee
-City or Rural Area
-Temporary/Seasonal or Year Round

Many times restaurants have food trucks to be able to go to different demographics and market their food. For example, there are very few individuals that ONLY have a food truck since it is very difficult to get business at times do to city ordinances, weather, etc. For example, in Chicago many of the food trucks found in the city are actual restaurants that have locations either in the city or nearby suburbs. The food trucks are only allowed to sell food within a specific set of feed from a brick and mortar building and can only be on a specific street for a period of time. The food trucks also have a lot of requirements that they must meet to be compliant with city code.

To answer your question about the pay - it all depends if you are self employed or an employee. I believe individuals at the food trucks basically make what individuals make at a restaurant - the only difference is that they are in a truck versus a brick and mortar location. I would say that individuals are making minimum just like any other fast food restaurant but it truly all depends on the company. If you are self employed, the sky is the limit and you can either be making a very nice salary or you could also be loosing money if you don't bring in clientele.

Overall, the salary of a fast food worker in chicago is about 24k - 28k per Salary.com. While there are many different variables affecting this number, you should now have a solid base on what to expect to make if you join the food industry.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks!
