Angela (Angie)’s Answer

Hi Briget, that is a great career field! I've found that the Bureau of Labor and Statistics is a wonderful resource for researching jobs in a similar career field, job outlook for growth, pay, etc.

Angela (Angie) recommends the following next steps:

Job shadow and do internships to get a good feel for a career you might be interested in.
Talk with your Academic Advisor and also the Career Services dept at your school.

Finance majors could have several different jobs. In corporate finance, you could do FP&A (Financial Planning and Analysis), BI (business intelligence), pricing, sales compensation, etc. Outside of the corporate realm, you could be a broker, a financial planner, a financial advisor, or even a loan officer at a bank. Now, you may have to start below these titles and work your way up to them, but you really could do a lot of things with a finance major.

Definitely consider treasury. This is a pretty specific niche within Corporate Finance, but can offer a great career. It's a specialized skill set, but give you visibility into the internal business drivers, but also a connection to the outside capital markets and banking. It can be hard to find specific treasury opportunities, but experience in corporate finance and banking can be a good place to start.

MICHAEL’s Answer

Bridget, Finance is a vast field. It would depend on what you wanted to do in finance. First speak to your adviser or guidance counselor. Also check out the government listings of positions in finance. There are probably several hundred, so you would have your work cut out for you, just to narrow it down. Major categories are
Purchasing, financial management, trading (Wall Street) and sales. You could also become a certified financial adviser, or a CPA or tax specialist. All of which would require specialized education and certification. Hope this helps.

Shawn A.’s Answer

Finance has a lot of variety and complexity, so it really is a question of what you are interested in. I work in a field called "FP&A" or Financial Planning & Analysis. I manage the budgets and spend of a tech company, effectively being a "CFO" of my corner of the business. I forecast spends, model business deals, look for inefficiencies and generally try to advise my business partners on how to optimize their resources with a specific focus on dollars and cents.

That said, there are a lot of other spaces where finance can work. Broad fields include data anlaytics/business intelligence, treasury, accounting, etc.

I suggest shadowing people in various finance fields to get a sense of what their job includes so you can get a sense of what appeals to you and how you might use your degree.

Thank you comment icon As various people have stated above, their are numerous positions available in finance. I would suggest trying to narrow down potential prospects that you think you might have an interest in. Try two different internships at companies while in college to see which one interests you. From personal perspective, I tried two different areas while in college. Learning how to be financial advisor to help people choose retirement investment options was something I liked but it also is an industry where it is commission oriented so you do feel pressured. Underwriting was another option I tried and was an industry I fell in love with as you get great job satisfaction and you help a person achieve their dream of homeownership as typically you are the one approving the loan. Good luck! Brian Downey
