John’s Answer

Real Estate Relator requirements vary by state. Most will require the individual to attend a course and then take a final exam. The course is not extremely difficult but requires some math and memorization of basic real estate laws. There are online courses as well as in-person classes. I would recommend in person classes if possible as you will gain more insight studying with others.

Course length can vary from 1 week to several weeks depending on the hours per day. Search for how to become a real estate agent specifically for your state to find out your requirements.

If looking to get a license for commercial real estate, it is a bit more intense and most have some college or degree. In terms of what places are hot, you can also search the internet but just because a place is hot one year doesn't make it so the next year. Austin, TX is a hot market because of all the IT companies relocating from California.

Once you have your license, you will need to find a broker to work under until you have the experience and money to start your own brokerage or become independent.

John recommends the following next steps:

Search on how to become a real estate agent for your state
Look for articles on top 10 real estate markets
Compare online vs. classroom training courses and costs. The cheapest may not be the best as you get what you pay for but don't overpay either
Ask your neighbors or friends how they purchased their home

Cindy’s Answer

Real estate is a relationship business. Get to know some realtors. Work in a real estate business, even if it's just putting up signs or running errands. This will help you know if the field is for you and you'll be able to observe what makes people sucessful.

If you do choose to go into the business, you might join a team of established realtors who will help you get a start in the profession.
