Brittney’s Answer

Nelly,

Nursing school is very competitive for admission but you are on the correct track, good grades and volunteering. I would recommend applying to a university which offers a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) program. For volunteering I recommend a volunteer opportunity which gives you as much clinical access and experience as possible, hands on with patients, access to read and learn from charts, and front line observing of the medical team when they are treating patients. https://copehealthscholars.org/high-school-students/ has great programs for high school/college/and nursing students.

Having a daughter who just went through the process, I think Brittney's advice is spot on. One other thing I would recommend is to job shadow people you may know in the medical field. This may provide you with some of the experiences mentioned above and potentially provide you with a variety of exposure. It will also further demonstrate your interest and passion for this line of work and may help in your application process. Also, once you get accepted to many schools :), I would recommend you be very thoughtful in the school you ultimately choose. I would consider the clinical opportunities they provide to their students and the medical facilities they partner with. In addition to your schooling, this will provide you with real world experiences from which you will ultimately choose a specialty. The quality of the clinical assignments is just as valuable as the school you choose. Best of Luck!
