What is a typical day in the life like for a medical student?
I am interested in going to medical school after college (possibly to be a surgeon), and was wondering what it would be like. #career #medicine #medicine-school

hi ankit,
i graduated med school in 1993 and have been a family physician for 20 years.
generally, the first two years of med school are like graduate school. you attend several science courses per day along with your 200 classmates. you take lots of notes, read book assignments, take tests. most people study together in groups.
some of the classes you take are anatomy, physiology, psychology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, radiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, genetics, and a few others.
there's usually some built in downtime in the schedule where you can go exercise, spend time with your family, or whatever.
the second two years are spent doing rotations in the hospital. you wear a white coat, draw blood, interview patients, attend surgeries, deliver babies, etc.
some of those rotations are internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics, family practice, surgery, a few others, and a few electives.
keep in mind that there are different types of medical schools with different curricula and schedules. and things may have changed a bit since i was there.
and don't forget that after medical school comes several years of residency. that's where you start taking primary responsibility for patients and where your practical training occurs.
good luck!
