Hi brandon. Thanks so much for this forward thinking question.

I noticed that your location is Burbank, CA. Did you know that the state of California has declared that by 2035 (13 years from now) , they will no longer allow gas powered cars on the road? And that other states are considering similar proposals?

I ask this question because one of the recommendations from the previous answer to your question "...EV, electric vehicles"...is spot on! In general, my recommendation to you is to learn everything you can about EV technology. There seems to be a pretty strong tide that is favoring this type of automotive technology including buyer incentives, governmental actions(local and national) and job creation (states where EV battery plants and car manufacturing are becoming cornerstones of job growth).

I would also imagine that top vehicle manufacturers would be seeking new employee applicants who are interesting in learning these new technologies. In general, established companies will also build incentives to attract and retain employees who show an interest in growth areas of their business. Many many of the top car manufacturers are pivoting to EV technology.

I imagine that in this new type of automotive technology, you will learn about lots of opportunities. And I wish you the very best of luck. :)

Engineering School is difficult. Automotive Engineering is an excellent choice. The ease of transportation is essential for the growth of society. Make sure you take as much higher math and physics that you can in high school. Learn a computer language in lieu of a foreign language. Do well on your ACT and get into a good school that has a good automotive engineering program. You should be able to learn everything you need at the university. Most engineering schools have excellent internships and cooperative relationships with private companies.

Sean’s Answer

Not being totally sure where you are in your academic career, I highly recommend a focus on Math and Science classes through High School so that you can get into a good Engineering College or University. Most people think of Automotive Engineering as being tied to Mechanical Engineering, but they also employ Electrical Engineers, Computer Systems Engineers, Chemical Engineers, and Industrial Engineers (think Six Sigma / Lean Manufacturing), so feel free to pick a major that interests you the most and don't think you have to be a MechE. The jobs are highly sought after, so the best thing you can do in college is select a school that has partnership programs with a major auto manufacturer for internships and participate in clubs (Formula SAE is a good one) or research projects that are related to set yourself apart from the other applicants.

I'm not an engineer! My husband is a retired 21 yrs. Ford Motor Company. He was in automatic transmissions.
1. Paying attention to the news, look what the future needs?
Renewable energy, EV, electric vehicles and very high level learning.
2. Look at WANT posts for engineers and see what jobs are requiring from your education and experience. This is super important. Stay current in the latest technology!
I hope this helps. Best wishes.
