Hi Stephen!
Kathy is absolutely right, definitely become proficient in as many editing softwares as you can! I would also say that building your portfolio will do you wonders, many creative jobs focus much more on your portfolio than your resume! Look online for opportunities to keep practicing, and if you know anyone who is making films, offer to help with the edit and with VFX! I know lots of people who became good at animations and visual effects and they are in constant demand. Good luck!

Hey Stephen,
I'm glad to hear that you're interested in moving up the ranks within the Film Editing industry! I will definitely recommend interning, and or finding assistant editing positions in production companies that you may be interested in. It's very difficult to find work as an editor without any experience, both on your resume and on your portfolio (two different things in the industry).
You definitely want to be proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and potentially: Davinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and most definitely: Avid. I highly recommend getting into basic SFX/VFX editing in After Effects, most editing positions will require you to have some basic VFX skills alongside proficient skills in cutting/putting together clips.
I also will recommend that you get a variety of projects under your belt: edit some short interviews/documentaries, ask a buddy if you can edit their music video, cut together some stock footage for an experimental piece or even throw together a quick commercial video. You can get free stock-footage online, multiple sites, for free or low-cost, and you can even use clips from your favorite music videos, youtube videos and more to get the practice!
Hope this helps!
