One piece of advice for anyone considering a career path is to shadow someone currently doing that type of work. To be able to spend a day seeing how they operate, the challenges and rewards of their day can be quite insightful.
Carpentry does involve math and planning. You also may want to consider basic business classes to understanding estimating, invoices, cost of materials etc.
