Sherman’s Answer

Hi Rebecca, Hopefully, your desire to switch to bba is because you're passionate about it. Ask yourself why are you looking at a marketing major! I choose marketing because I'm passionate about the creative, communication, events, design and working with different people. I wasn't interested in history, politics, law, science, programming, finance, medical, health care or math. I started in sales but didn't like the pressures of sales targets so I switched to marketing. Marketing has a very broad range of jobs so you should research what you enjoy to help determine what you should study. In undergrad you'll get a mix of classes to help you decide or figure out the right career so enjoy the journey! Hope this helps and good luck. Sherman

Caitriona’s Answer

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your question. Unfortunately no one can choose your major for you, but this is a great place to get some advice :)

I would recommend choosing a degree that you are interested in and if you aren’t sure, start off with a broad subject, before narrowing down in later years.

You can also look at graduate statistics: how many people are in jobs, job industries etc and decide if that’s a career path you want to follow.

Something to consider is that many people do not work in the field that they studied in. My degree (Biology) is completely different from my career (Marketing), but I’ve found the link between those two (analytical, product, technical). This decision doesn’t necessarily define everything forever. I liked studying biology at school and was interested in deepening my knowledge at university, plus gaining STEM skills. Then I liked marketing because it combined both creativity with analytics, which I felt I was strong at thanks to my degree.

Explore, talk to people, follow your interests!

Caitriona recommends the following next steps:

Write down what interests you about BBA versus marketing
Write down why you think you would be good at those respective subjects
Do some research on the graduate statistics in each of those subjects - are graduates securing jobs in areas that you're interested in?
Thank you comment icon I appreciate your support, Caitriona Rebecca

Eric’s Answer

I actually started off as a Graphic Designer and moved into Marketing over time. I went back to school to study business with my major in Marketing. For someone just starting in this field I would highly recommend getting into Digital Marketing. I've been doing this for over 25 years now and the one I can tell you is that more and more of Marketing is shifting to digital.

Anny’s Answer

Hi, Rebecca
I always thought I would be in health sciences. However, after my first course in marketing, I knew that it was for me. My college required us to take the majority of our classes in our field of study. However, there were a few elective courses that allowed us to explore our interests. I was always interested in marketing (and read a ton of books by advertising legends) but did not realize that I would enjoy it so much. So if that is an option for you, taking a few classes is a low-risk way of exploring an interest. If you are already working, is there a program within your company that allows you to rotate through different departments? This would allow you to see if the daily work is of interest.

Even if you have completed a degree in science, you may find opportunities in sales/marketing. Multi-national companies are always on the lookout for talent with technical skills who can speak to a more technical audience.

Good luck to you!
