When changing your major you should try to contact the academic advisors at the school you are attending. Do some research too on the new major. Have the academic advisor sort your credit transfers. You want to get all of the credits- BUT this might not be the case. You may also have appeal the schools decision on what credits transfer. I had not changed my major at school because Law was the only thing I was interested in, but I have family members that have changed majors.

Choosing a major is not an easy feat! I changed my major in the middle of my first year. If you make a dramatic shift, from one major to another, or for e.g. from a B.com to a BSC, usually, you will have to start over. Ask your university about the subjects you have completed and if you can get credits for those completed courses, sometimes, some introductory courses like introduction to research, English etc. will be transferable to your new course.
Don't worry if you make a shift (because you have found what you want to do and you are passionate about making a success in it), nothing you have learnt is wasted. You will be able to use all the knowledge and wisdom you have accumulated over your life, even if it means you will be a first year again next year.
My best advice is to make sure you know what you want to specialize in before making the change because you don't want to do it over and over again. My parents taught me, finish everything you start. Finally I closed my studies (completed and graduating) in 5 degrees because I had many wide interests. Make certain you know what you really want to do and then make the switch. There is no harm in taking a gap year and travelling and volunteering abroad as well, if you are still not certain. Take time to reflect and make sure you want to invest your life's work for the next 3-4 years into the direction you have now chosen.
