Ryan’s Answer
To become a green beret there are essentially three different paths.
1. From civilian status (Also called 18X Pipeline): With this you will enlist to go to Infantry basic training, airborne school, and then Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS). If you fail to complete the requirements for each of these, you will still have to complete your contract duration as an infantryman (MOS 11B).
2. From enlisted military status: You will serve for 2-4 years until you receive the rank of SGT (E-5). You will then apply for SFAS and will receive your green beret upon completion of the 2 year qualification course.
3. From officer military status: You will serve for about 4 years until you receive the rank of 1LT (O-2). You will then apply for SFAS and if you pass you will go to infantry career course for Captains then attend the 2 year qualification course.
