There are many different kinds of psychologists. The kind that most people think of is a clinical psychologist. Clinical psychologists treat mental health issues by doing assessments, diagnosing and providing psychotherapy or other interventions. In some states psychologists are allowed to prescribe medication with additional training. I had a practice doing exclusively psychological testing. This is a method of assessment created by and used primarily by psychologists.
Becoming a clinical psychologist requires four years of college followed by doctoral training. A doctorate, usually either a PhD or PsyD requires 4 to 7 years beyond college. Generally 2 years of internship are additionally required to become eligible for licensure as a psychologist.
Other psychology specialties include industrial/organizational, counseling, and school psychology. Psychologists also work as college professors and researchers. In general, psychologists use behavioral science principles in order to help individuals to have better lives. They may provide services to individuals, families, businesses, and the legal system.
