How would I specialize in Pediatrics and Orthopedics as a nurse?
I am a senior in high school and I want to eventually become a Pediatric Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner. For now I plan on attending a university after I graduate in May and majoring in Nursing. Should I major in something else?

That’s an awesome goal. In order to achieve your goal of becoming a pediatric orthopedic nurse practitioner, you do have to go to nursing school. The basic pathway is bachelors degree in nursing, practice as a nurse for a minimum of a year and then get your masters or doctorate degree as a nurse practitioner. I would probably recommend getting the advanced degree as a pediatric nurse practitioner and then look at further specializing in orthopedics. To the best of my knowledge, there aren’t any orthopedics nurse practitioner degrees. Hope this helped.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer this! Thank you!

Hi Kalysa,
You may choose Public Health, which exposes you to generalist background to enable you explore many areas. You may tailor switch to another program more easily if you want with Public Health, be it - Nursing, Pediatrics or Orthopedics.
You can specialize in Pediatrics or Orthopedics at graduate level in many schools or after foundation years of your undergraduate Nursing program. Your course counsellor in your school will guide you on subjects to choose that is specific to the school.
Success!

Hi Kalysa!
There’s a couple pathways one can take toward becoming a pediatric orthopedic practitioner. One route is to get your nursing license (ADN) and get experience as a pediatric nurse get paid while you earn your bachelors degree (your employer will help pay for that) before going on to nurse practitioner school. Another is to get your bachelors degree and go to PA (physician assistant) school. Both take about the same amount of time to accomplish. I admire your goals you have set for yourself. Take the time to explore you might surprise yourself! Wishing you the best!
