What are some good career paths that would be interesting for someone who enjoys English?

I would enjoy doing something with journalism or being able to do something with law. I've always liked sticking up for people that aren't getting the respect that they deserve. I want to make a lot of money to be able to support my family if I ever have one.

Hi Trinity! I got my degree in English, and the combination of critical thinking + clear communication makes it great for many different career paths.

Here are a few more paths you could consider:
-UX writing
-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work
-Marketing—for example, writing and planning content for companies/websites/social media

For some of the paths above, you may have to supplement them with additional learning (a project, a few courses, a certificate, etc.) to show that you know the basic concepts. Other times, companies will help you learn those specialized skills on the job. Best of luck!

I was an English major and began my career in public relations immediately after college and now lead Corporate Affairs/Corporate Communications for a large company and am able to do much of what I love every day and also support my family on a single salary. I would suggest exploring PR as a possible field -- PR internships are a great way to find out if you think the field is something you would enjoy. I would suggest looking for internships at communications or PR agencies as that can give you the broadest range of experience from the start. I loved being an English major, loved writing, reading and analyzing stories or narratives. I also enjoy working with people and am relatively social. To your point about sticking up for people who need defending, clearly being a lawyer is directly relevant there and also a lucrative career path, but PR and communications can also include some of that element and isn't quite as technical as law, which is something I like about it. If PR or corporate communications are of interest to you I'm happy to answer more questions about the day-to-day and career path. Best of luck!

Bianca recommends the following next steps:

Identify local PR or communications agencies
Apply for internships

Journalism is an incredible field, one which I worked in as a reporter and editor for nearly a decade, so I highly recommend it... Many journalists evolve into careers in law, education, public relations (corporate, nonprofit, public sector/government, political), technical writing, content creation & writing, copy writing, grant writing, marketing, product development & management. In all these fields, there is a great measure of writing needed. Many who in these fields are also freelance writers or book authors to boot.
