Laura’s Answer

My advice would be to major in something that you could also use in another field if you start in Criminal Justice and do not find it the best career path for you. I began my career in the Federal Government (specifically intelligence), and the best recommendation I received was to choose a major that could carry me across multiple career paths. I chose Psychology/Education for my BA and Educational Psychology with a focus in Behavioral Analysis for my MA. Criminal Justice is a popular major for most individuals interested in becoming a criminal investigator; however, I would look at options such as Psychology, International Relations (for a specific Federal Gov't career), Forensic Sciences, Strategic Intelligence, and National Security. And having working knowledge (and proficiency) in a second language is always a PLUS!

James’s Answer

To be a successful criminal investigator, you can actually major in anything. There are degrees that could make it easier and make you a more attractive hire, though. Criminal Justice is a popular major that is offered at most colleges. I would start there. Another option would be to look for a more specific major such as Criminology. Criminology deals directly with the psychology of criminals. Criminology is not offered at a ton of schools, and it would make it harder to change your mind down the line. Those two are the best options that I can think of. There are others.
