If you are already familiar with some organizations/ businesses that utilize the services of interior designers, research the job qualifications in their human resource postings. Requirements could range from a vocational certificate all the way up to a higher education degree.
I do not know what resources are available in your area, but community college classes are a great way to get a "taste" for interior design if they have a program for interior design, and they usually can be completed for a fraction of the cost of a 4 year college. For example, my institution offers classes and a certificate program for vocational study: https://continue.austincc.edu/design

To sit for the NCIDQ exam, you have to have a combination of education and experience as described on their webpage: https://www.cidq.org/paths

Most firms will require at least a bachelor's degree and in some states, designers are required to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam.
