David’s Answer

You can take acting classes.
You can audition for community theater productions.
You can look for other opportunities to perform - Renaissance Fairs, Dickens/Christmas Fairs, Theme Parks performances.
You can investigate joining Speech and Debate in school. This is good practice strengthening your voice and getting comfortable speaking to a roomful of people.
You can also read books and watch videos about acting and actors. Read about actors whose work you admire - see where they went to school, how they started acting, etc.

Your school’s speech and debate team or Forensics team is a great place to learn and practice the same acting skills: telling a story, creating a character, using language, performing in front of an audience. Being in other performance arts like choir is another way flex the same muscles. If there is a film club or class in your school, join that. Or start one!

I would also find opportunities in other classes to present. If you have a choice between writing an essay or doing a 2-3 min presentation, go with the presentation and practice putting together a compelling set and being in front of a crowd.

Lastly, always take opportunities to speak or perform in public. Family gatherings, church, wherever it may be, if you are speaking or performing for people, you’re learning what it takes to prepare and feel confident as an actor.

In addition to David’s great advice, I would also recommend improv groups, improv classes and volunteering for professional theatrical companies/theater spaces and large theater festivals. Even taking movement, dance and voice lessons can be of great help so you know your personal strengths and weaknesses. You’ll also make a wider range of contacts and friends who share a similar artistic passion.
