Mike’s Answer

If your heart is set on the FBI, I would not get a degree in CJ. This goes for any federal agency (HSI, DEA, EPA, ATF, etc.). We will teach you how to conduct investigations at the academy. Get a degree in something that you can use outside of law enforcement. Most agencies want applicants from different backgrounds.

As far as a BA vs BS, that all depends on what you want to do with your degree later on. Do you want to continue on with your education at a higher level? For hiring purposes, it does not matter one way or another.

Mike recommends the following next steps:

Look into other agencies for 1811 Special Agent / Criminal Investigator jobs.

Alan’s Answer

I totally agree, i have a masters in criminal justice and am nearing the end of my PhD the only benefit is to teach criminal justice classes once out. As far as a bachelor's you would already be working in the field of criminal justice so it's not really necessary to get a degree in it. Get a business or something you can expand on and use outside of law enforcement.

William’s Answer

If you're keen on boosting your odds with the FBI, consider becoming a CPA. The FBI and Justice Department are constantly on the hunt for accountants. They often handle a large number of financial crime cases, so your skills would be highly valuable!
