There are a variety of roles a bank accountant can take depending on the size and complexity of the bank (for example, working with accounts payable, taxes, journal entries, forecasting and modeling). It is not all math, and it is very dependent on technology so technology coursework helps. Bank accounting can be very unique - a good reference material to learn more about bank accounting is the OCC's Bank Accounting Advisory Series. I started my banking career working as a bank examiner and during that time, earned my CPA certification. This has opened up lots of opportunities within banking not limited to accounting. My best advice is to find an entry point into banking, whether as a teller or customer support representative, or as a bank examiner with the federal or state government to learn more about banking. If you do that and work on a certification, it should provide many opportunities in bank accounting.
Great answer Megan!

What is the reason to be a Bank Accountant only?
If you have an accounting degree you can work anywhere.
Banks typically do not pay well while other fields pays well if you have Accounting degree.
Do not limit yourself to working in a bank - expand your horizon and focus on a major, ie Accounting or Finance.
