what advice/ tactics can you give me to use when I feel like I want to give up or feel really stressed ?

I want to be a nurse in labor and delivery, I know it can get really stressful or hard working in the medical felid which can make you feel all kinds of way and for some people cause depression because something happened to a patient or what not that made you think of your own family, and I just want advice on how to deal with it because I myself suffered depression and sometimes I don't know how to deal with my stressful thoughts at times. This question is also for people and myself for just starting school in college soon.

Madison, this is such a great question because you're prioritizing self-care, which is exactly what you need to do in order to deal with stressful situations. In addition to my job as a life and leadership coach, I volunteer every week as a suicide counselor. The training for this was extensive, and I was surprised by how much energy went into the planning of our self-care. Before our training shifts, we always needed to plan how we were going to take care of ourselves during and after the shift. I didn't understand why this was important in the beginning, so I didn't take it seriously, but I soon realized that plan made all the difference. And that's why your planning now is so important. You're already recognizing the need for self-care, and you understand that in order to be useful to other people you need to first give yourself love and attention. So, experiment with different things and ask lots of people and you'll find what works best. Personally, I need to either eat chocolate or talk to somebody who will first empathize with how I'm feeling and then make me laugh. Good luck!

My wife graduated from nursing several years ago and wanted to go into labour and delivery nursing. While she was in school she found that finding people to share notes with and study with was helpful. Explaining the information to someone else can really help solidify the information you're learning. Having a nursing friend you can share the difficult days with is helpful too, because as much as I support my wife, I do not know the intricacies of nursing. She took some doula courses, asked for particular placements, sought out volunteer opportunities. But above all, what I think she learned most to balance her mood and profession was that in the end 12 hour shifts were unsustainable for her. She ended up switching to primary care nursing and public health nurses, both which offer a better work-life balance. She is really happy with the populations she works with because she gets to know them over the course of visits versus just a single shift and never seeing them again. She has found it incredibly helpful to have a therapist to discuss personal and professional challenges as well. Best of luck in your studies!
