I echo Cori - I would say really try to set yourself apart by extracurriculars. I didn't go to a small school, but rather a large extremely competitive high school where I didn't want to get lost in the sea of over achievers and high test scores. I used a musical instrument (played violin for 15 years) and a sport (played soccer competitively for 10 years) as ways to round out my profile. Being an athlete also played in my favor as I ultimately was recruited by my college so I ended up securing both financial aid as well as application support from the athletics department. I didn't need to, but I added some footage of me playing the violin in recitals and concerts as a supplement to my application to really round out myself as an applicant.

Hi Richard!
Great question! In addition to the other answers on this post, I would recommend volunteering on weekends for your local animal shelter or non-profit. College's do like to see their students participating and volunteering in helping the community and giving back.

A great way to get noticed is to have a POSITIVE digital footprint online. It is wonderful to have good grades and participate in extracurricular activities. A huge bonus is completing community service and volunteerism. These are the things that colleges can see about you if you are on social media; how you connect with others and what good things you collaborate on to make a difference. They will take notice of your efforts to have a wide positive reach beyond your school and community.
This advice is even more important if you have engaged in "less than ideal" social media participation in the past. You want all of the good things you are doing to outshine any pranks, negative photos/videos or politically incorrect behaviors you might have previously posted online. remember that EVERYTHING you post can be dug up.

There no small or big school for colleges to reach out to you. Be confident, at your junior year you will start receiving mail at your home from universities.
Your next step is always to work well on your grades.
Then talk to your advisor and attend university events at your school or school district
