To become a doctor, you first need 4 years of an undergraduate (college or university) degree… and you can major in just about anything! You want to enjoy learning, studying and be ok with tests! So the subject matter has to be interesting to you!! However, there are some basic “premed” courses that you should take. (Example: biochemistry and physics). Different majors can make it hard to balance the science courses that also include labs (separate time from lectures). So speaking to a premed advisor can be helpful,

Residency is the training you get after medical school for the specialty that you want to pursue. if you like gastroenterology, you’d first do an general internal medicine residency for three years then another 3 years in fellowship of gastroenterology. Lots of steps, but there are many doors that open!
