My first degree is an Honours Specialization in English Literature. I some how found time to also act as the editor and chief of a poetry and prose magazine that published student's writing. While an English degree will give you a great deal of experience with writing, editing, research, and communication, I found the editing, writing, and publishing experience was the most interesting aspect of my resume for many employers.
Depending on the degree, you are going to develop a wide range of skills. Volunteering on top of that will help distinguish yourself from others with similar degrees (if you can find the time!).
