If I want to get a career in nursing, what should I do before college to be as prepared as possible?
Is there any jobs, internships, or shadowing I should do before college to be more prepared? Or research? #Fall22

Many medical facilities have opportunities for volunteerism. You can get a good sense of what a nursing career is like and have actual interaction with nurses of different background a specialties. Find your local hospital web page and search for "volunteer opportunities". You should find a website telling you about how to apply and what the requirements are for such positions. When I was younger, the program was called "Candy-striped nurses".
In school, make sure that you are engaging in science classes that support your choice of career such as biology, anatomy and chemistry. Don't be afraid to ask your teachers if they might know of any extra-curricular programs that might help you find further experience.

Thanks for your encouragement!

Although I work in laboratory I know a lot of hospitals have shadowing opportunities as well. You can try that as well as nursing homes and clinics too.
Certified nursing assistant programs might be an option for you to look into while you are going to school as well.

Hi Katherine,
There is definitely a slew of opportunities, right? There is no specific route that you need to take. Just get moving is the first step. You could look into becoming a nurse assistant, phlebotomist, medical assistant, or medical scribe. You could possibly shadow these positions and get an idea of what this looks like for those in these positions. Volunteering at your local hospital is definitely something you should consider.
Best of luck,

CPR certification, consider basic first responder training, CNA courses, CNA job at a local hospital, volunteer positions at a hospital, caregiving position outside of the hospital (there are tons of them!)

become a certified nursing assistant or medical assistant at a community college (it's cheapest there). get a job in that role in the hospital and you will half of everything you need to know about being a nurse on the job! it's fun too. you will love it. sometimes the hospital will pay for part of your nursing school too. ask around at your local hospitals.
good luck!
