What prerequisites should I have and are needed to be successful in a business major?
I am currently a senior at Bourne High School and have started to get accepted into colleges as a business major. I want to know what classes or background information I need to know before stepping into a class that will help me succeed.

Hi Grace!
I'm currently a junior in college studying international business and management. The courses that are required for a business major at college largely vary depending on what university you attend. A lot of the classes you take freshman year will be basic business classes such as finance, economics, accounting, management science and other subjects such as English or even a language. If possible try taking some of these classes or do some research on these subjects, they will help you get familiar with some of the material taught in college. I would especially take many AP courses or SL/HL International Baccalaureate classes so that you can maybe earn credit for some college level classes, this will save you time in college if your college accepts these credits!
Any classes in excel or Microsoft office will be very helpful even if you just learn these things on your own because you will use those tools on a daily basis!

Additionally, marketing and research classes are most helpful. And if it is offered, a psychology and negotiation class to understand the people / customers that you’ll come across and work with. Lastly, group projects will help put in play what you are learning.

Being a business major usually means being in the business college. From there, you can declare of of many offered business majors at your institution: accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, management, supply chain management, management information systems, international business, real estate, human resources management, business communications, to name some examples.
Things to consider: think about what you like, what you don't mind spending 40+ hours of your life doing each week, and what has job openings to afford you the future lifestyle you desire.
Things I look for in a candidate as a member of the on-campus recruiting team: is this person coachable and a life-long learner, do they have emotional intelligence and know how to have appropriate professional conversations, are they an honest and hard worker that I can trust to get the job done, do they have leadership experience, can they work in a team,

I would make sure you have a good foundation in finance and accounting. Also, meet with your advisor regularly to ask them for a good path.
