There are many options for estimating. They all of their strengths and weaknesses. Some are fast to calculate, others take more time to enter the data.
One point estimating.
Analogous Estimating (Top-Down)
Parametric Estimating
Regression analysis.
Learning curve
Heuristics
Three-Point Estimating
Triangular Distribution (Simple Average)
Beta Distribution (Weighted Average)
Bottom Up Estimating
Affinity Estimating
T-Shirt Sizing (for a project, not a task).
Most of the time, for IT planning, we ask the IT resource for an estimate on a particular task. They generally have enough experience to give an accurate estimate on the task. Analogous Estimating (Top-Down).
