1. Communication Skills: Being able to effectively communicate with patients, caregivers, colleagues, physicians, and other healthcare professionals is an essential skill for a successful registered nurse.

2. Listening: Being able to listen to patients, caregivers and colleagues with respect and understanding is an invaluable skill for a registered nurse.

3. Empathy and Compassion: Being able to show empathy and compassion for all patients and their family members is critical for providing care. Registered Nurses must be able to demonstrate empathy in their interactions with others.

4. Problem-solving: Registered Nurses must be able to quickly and effectively assess a patient’s condition, determine treatment plans, and adjust the plan appropriately.

5. Positive Attitude and Team Player: Having a positive attitude and being able to work well independently and as part of a healthcare team are essential traits in a successful registered nurse.

6. Professionalism: Professionalism and leadership skills are essential for a successful registered nurse.

7. Organization: Registered Nurses must be able to organize patient records, medications and treatments while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

8. Attention to Detail: Registered Nurses must be able to accurately assess a patient’s condition and treatment plan while paying attention to changes in condition and interactions with other healthcare professionals.

9. Stress Management: Registered Nurses must also be able to manage their own stress levels in order to provide effective care for their patients.

1-A skill that’s helped me care for patients, and interact with others is motivational interviewing. This enables conversations that can lead to behavior change for individuals, and guides them toward health.
2-Emotional intelligence. Don’t always act on your immediate emotional response.
3-The ability to provide care. I don’t mean hands-on care, but instead to make people feel cared for.
