Hi Xochitl,
Veterinarian is a very rewarding profession! I'd recommend that you start to build a social network. Reach out to your local veterinarian to see if they're let you come in and shadow for a day. If you get this opportunity, I suggest you ask as many questions as possible. Here are some questions that come to my mind:
- Do you enjoy your job?
- What do you dislike about the job?
- Why did you want to be a veterinarian?
- How did you get into the profession?
- Would you recommend this job to your children?
- Would you still decide to be a veterinarian if you were to go back in time and restart your career?
Regarding specific jobs you can pursue in college, I suggest working as a receptionist at a local veterinary office or at a local animal shelter. Here you'll get the opportunity to learn from some professionals in the industry.
LinkedIn is another great resource available to discover potential job opportunities. I suggest you view veterinarian profiles, and see what jobs they had in college. Once you have this info, you can apply for similar roles.
Outside of this, please use the resources that are available to you. Watch Youtube vidoes related to veterinary medicine, and check Veterinarian LinkedIn profiles. These profiles will list their job history, this can give you a better sense of specific job titles you can begin to look for,.
Receptionist at a vet, or work at an animal shelter.

Unfortunately while I was attending college I could not work in a clinic, with the commitment they would need from me and the school load I had it would've been to much. Instead I worked a part time job at a restaurant as a hostess during the weekends so I could focus all my time on school, internships, labs and homework. Something I'm very glad I did. I fortunately had four internships that were required as part of my program so I was still able to get lots of hands on experience and practice within a clinic, I also had plenty of labs with even more hands on practice. If you are thinking of attending veterinary school or even CVT school then you should spend that time focusing on your school work, while you're in school you'll have plenty of hands on experience with clinical, labs and internships. A job will add to much stress and you could start to lose focus and fall behind. During your internships and clinical you should try and make connections with the veterinarians and staff because they might offer you a job in the future. You should also advocate for yourself and ask to perform tasks because that is the only way you'll learn, don't be afraid to speak up. You're there to learn and practice and they know that. If you do need a job I would recommend something with minimal hours, like maybe a few days working/volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue. Maybe start pet sitting for friends or neighbors and build a clientele that way, I did that while in school. It's an easy and less stressful way to make money while in school. Even work part time at a restaurant on the weekends or babysitting.
