Hi Xochitl,

Science courses are good to take in high school for preparation for veterinary medicine. Biology, chemistry and physics will provide one with the science fundamentals. English, communications and public speaking will help one to communicate with patients and other veterinary staff. Math courses will enable one to strengthen critical thinking and deductive reasoning. If your high school offers a course in animal science, it is recommended to take this course.

If you have an animal clinic in your area, a visit with the Veterinarian will offer the opportunity to learn more about the required education to get into the field. The Veterinarian can advise what courses are necessary to take in high school, what courses are expected in college, career track, internships, daily activities and responsibilities and so forth.

Best wishes for your education and future as a Veterinarian!

Juli’s Answer

Thanks for your question. In high school it's very important to take all the science and math classes they offer and to get excellent grades in all of them. This means also taking Physics, calculus and organic chemistry. If these courses aren't offered, ask your guidance counselor where you can take them online. It's extremely important to get help from a tutor or the teacher if you don't understand the material and to master the material as you will need to do more of the same in the undergraduate pre veterinarian or pre-med programs. Taking a course in Latin is very helpful as you will need it to learn medical terminologies. Business courses can help you successfully run your own business and teach you money management so that you can repay student loans. I hope this helps. Its a long road but it's a very rewarding career.

Juli recommends the following next steps:

Talk to your guidance counselor about classes and ask if any former students have gotteninto veterinary or medical school.
